On Running

At this point, I pretty much have a 10K on lock down. Running at a decent clip, this is now my norm for a weekend run, which is cool but I want to step up the pace a bit. What I love about running is that you can take it a couple of ways: 1) run further or 2) run faster. Right now, my body can barely handle getting to the half marathon mark and I am thinking that maybe its time to step up the pace rather than coninuing the longest run steez that I have been working with for the past few months. That is the beauty of running, there are always ways to improve, always new goals to conquer. You can never master running. There is no high score or ultimate distance that you can run. Someone (maybe even you) can go out there the next day and beat it. It’s a beautiful struggle, an enduring battle within yourself to see how far you can go.

Today was a rather shabby 10K, my stomach ached and my time wasn’t anything to be proud of. But it is the strength that I gain from plodding through the crappy runs that will eventually lead me to a new best time. Even after the worst of runs, the sense of accomplishment is gratifying and the yearning to push harder grows.

Don’t Underestimate the Shuffle Step

DeKalb Avenue Merchants Association has been together a doozy of a list of restaurants, bars, hat shops and general stores that are celebrating Obama’s Inauguration day with sales and deals galore. It’s great to see as this neighborhood has been super supportive of Obama’s campaign, not only the people who live here but the small business owners, who have had signs and shirts in their window for almost a year.

Will be hitting up many of these specials over the course the weekend. Are any other neighborhoods as giddy about the big day than Fort Greene?

The Sad, Sorry Logo at Pay-O-Matic

This is the check cashing shop on the corner of my block. Already a sad state of affairs, as the place rips off poor people who can’t get a checking account or need to pay late bills fast by charging crazy fees.
If that wasn’t enough, look at the logo on this bad boy.

WTF? So sad

Is that a frowny face, with a single tear coming from its left eye? Jesus, the people walking in are already bummed they have to give you 10% of their check just to get cash, no banks will let them set up a checking account and probably they are in serious fucking debt. But then to create a logo that mocks them? Sick.

Considering opening up my own check cashing spot with a big ole’ smiley face and calling it SAMPSON. You need some cash fast? You need to talk to Sampson!

Grass-fed meat? Yes, please!

Brownstoner.com is reporting that the amazing peeps behind Diner and Marlow & Sons have opened up a butcher shop right down the road selling exclusively grass-fed meat, called Marlow & Daughters.
Having frequented Marlow & Sons and always being amazed at the high quality dishes with fresh vegetables and meats they continuously provide, this is a very exciting opening. Can I lug 50 lbs of fresh beef heart down Myrtle Ave without getting questioned? We will soon find out.
